Post-Modernism

Where else do you study or encounter a post-modern style of reflecting the world? Where else have you observed life or art reflecting a somewhat chaotic reality?

We have studied post-modernism with Mr. Roys in Precalculus last year. Also, post-modernism appears a lot in a book i read a while ago called Beautiful Lies (unfortunetly i have forgotten the author's name). Post-modernism is seen in the abstract painting style of Pablo Piccasso reflecting the Spanish Civil War leading to the dictatorship of Francsico Franco. Post-modernism in life can be found in many places. When i used to live in India and still today, terrorist bombings are quite common there, including a personal experiance where a bomb was found in the airport in a bag on the chair right across from where we were sitting. Also, in current war zones today such as Iraq, Darfur, Israel, or Kashmir, where my Uncle died, are very chaotic with no rules. Also, Mr. Roys will firmly state that Math has become an area of post-modernism as more and more is being found in the Maths, but this is also true of literature analysis of some works, Art, Music, and the Sciences. Growing up can be chaotic in this post-modern era as the pressures have now grown to be so much more and the expectations high in every direction. Often i see my Friends being overwhelmed by these pressures and their worries of not making it. The political stage is chaotic in both the foreign scene with China and India becoming rising economic powers, Russia still recovering from its collapse, North Korea building nuclear weapons, Iran threatening to wipe Israel off the map, multiple genocides across the globe, and many surpressed nations wanting to be recognized such as Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang, Kurdistan, and the Tamil Tigers. Also in the domestic scene, we see the issues of foreign policy, domesitic rights in the areas of abortion, gun control, homosexuality, and stem cell research, and the economy. All of this also brings into question morality, which is different for every person and what is right or wrong comes into question as there is no definitive answer. Philosophies like Social Darwinism and Nihilism challenge the traditional Christian and Judaic morals which bring a different perspective from the Hindu morals that vary from the morals of Shaminism and Animism which differ from the varying beliefs that secular people hold. Even in the fixed religions, many branches divide the ideas on morality and this differing in morality creates very different people leading to the post-modern era's diversity. Managing life and reltionships in this post-modern diverse era can be very challenging and the "high school drama" as well as the politics in a work place or managing a marraige can all become very complicated and chaotic. There is no longer a set path in life for most Americans. Apprenticeship to the parents' trades is no longer the expectations of society. Society and globalization that has expanded society is also very chaotic and as the boundires of countries are erased by the internet and technology even more diversity comes and more morals put into question. Ultimately this questioning of morality and society leads to make life chaotic in general and that is what makes up the idea of post-modernism. The Vietnam War was in some ways just part of the beginning of this with its own chaos of unknown enemies and multitudes of protestors.

I have seen post-modernism when talking with my grandfather about WWII because he lost his father and a brother. They lived in Sicily during the war and he remembers when the United States took it over. It also is evidnet in the movie Red Dawn because it shows a WWIII taking place on American soil. The movie came out in 1984 by John Milius

I would like to adress the concept of post modernism. Hopefully, I am not wrong, but the movie Forrest Gump gives the world a fresh perspective on Vietnam. While most movies about Vietnam that were produced after the war dealt with realistic effects and the hero ideal, this movie was different. It dealt with the common man perspective of an American soldier. Forrest represents the general innocence of a young soldier fresh out of college. This movie should be viewed by everyone who wants to learn about vietnam.

Post modernism can be seen in many thing if looked at close enough. For example, going to dinner with the family and observing the way you grandparents treat your parents and how your parents treat you. This can somewhat resmble the expectations/way your parents grew up and how they were so different from teenagers in the modern day world. Another example of post-modernism is going downtown and seeing how the streets(violence) has changed and how society overall has changed.

Post-modernism can be described as chaotic and non-chaotic. The chaotic elements are of war and other lawlessness. The non-chaotic elements are of emotion, mainly limiting of sociatal elements. These drive people into certain groups, separating people for materialistic reasons. It's time to move forwrd from post-modernism and start anew.
